The pinhole gum rejuvenation technique is a minimally invasive treatment option used to reverse gingival recession without the need for grafting or sutures.

Pinhole gum rejuvenation allows coronal positioning of the gingival margin to cover recession of the gums, but it is not done with the use of scalpels or sutures.

Instead, a small pinhole is created in the area of recession and specialized instruments are inserted through that hole to elevate a full-thickness “flap”.

Once the periosteum is elevated from the bone and tooth, it easily can be pushed coronally.

Collagen membrane is cut into strips and placed through the pinhole that was used to elevate the periosteum.

The strips are then pushed under the gingiva into the interproximal spaces, covering the facial surfaces of the previously exposed roots.

The tissue is supported at the new position, and the strips assist in wound stabilization during healing to ensure root coverage.

This technique gives a major advantage compared to traditional connective tissue grafting and offers the added convenience  of treating as many teeth in one sitting as the patient desires.

PST can be used to treat the whole mouth and be completed in a single sitting. Additional advantages include significantly less chair time than conventional procedures, better patient acceptance, and less pain.

What is gum recession?

Gum recession refers to the exposure of the roots and the loss of gum tissue along the gum-line.

It is caused by periodontal disease including gingivitis and periodontists.

Natural aging process and abrasive brushing habits can also cause gum recession.

Why should gum recession be taken seriously?

More structure of the tooth becomes exposed when gum recession occurs.

Once gum strips away from the roots, the bone also strips away from the roots.

Too much bone loss can lead to the loss of one or more teeth in the future.

Tooth decay and other problems can also develop along the gum-line and beneath it.

The loss of gum tissue between the teeth also increases spaces between these areas.

There would be more chances of food impaction which can lead to more recession and/or tooth decay.

Healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth and lasting dental wellness.

What is the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST)?

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive option for treating gum recession.

Unlike traditional grafting techniques, PST is incision and suture free.

Dr. Chow is a Certified Dentist who can perform PST.

How does the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST) differ from traditional gum grafting?

Traditionally, gum recession treatments involve the use of donor tissue from the roof of your mouth.

This donor tissue would be sutured in place and would be absorbed with the existing gum tissue when it heals.

This traditional gum grafting treatment is also effective.

However, comparable results with better patient experience can be achieved through the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique.

benefits of Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique

How is the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST) performed?

With the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique, a needle is used to make a small hole above the patient’s gum tissue.

Special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue through this pinhole.

The released gum is then re-positioned over the roots.

There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique.

It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue.
