Align Crooked, Uneven Teeth With Traditional Braces

For patients who desire a straighter smile, Elements Dental offers a variety of orthodontic treatments, including Invisalign, clear aligners and traditional braces.  That means you can count on the same trusted team for teeth straightening as you do for the rest of you and your family’s dental care. We continue to monitor your orthodontic finish when you come back for your regular check-ups!  We provide both aligner therapy and conventional braces, giving you the freedom to find the most suitable treatment for your needs. Some patients choose wire (traditional braces) over clear aligners because they do not need to worry about wearing their aligners all the time.  Because the effectiveness of clear aligners is controlled by the patient’s compliance, the final results are very much dependent on the patient’s wear time. Traditional braces, on the other hand, are more ‘guaranteed’ as the movements are controlled by the dentist, not the patient’s compliance.  There are two types of traditional braces:

  • Metal Braces — Generally the most cost-effective option
  • Ceramic Braces — white brackets that blend in with the colour of your teeth

Whether your case is moderate or severe, you can rest assured that Dr. Ray T. Chow will provide you with the highest level of orthodontic care in Victoria, BC. The decision to undergo orthodontic treatment with our dedicated team can improve the appearance of your smile, oral health, and self-confidence.

Understanding Traditional Braces

Traditional braces use metal wires and brackets to shift teeth into proper alignment. Over the course of treatment, we will regularly perform adjustments. During these visits, we will adjust the wires to apply proper force for teeth to move into the next phase of alignment. The typical treatment timeline is about 12 to 18 months.
Traditional braces can correct various alignment issues, including:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crooked teeth
  • Overcrowding
  • Gaps
  • Open bite

Typically, for patients who require serious correction, traditional braces are recommended since they can withstand the necessary force to drastically move teeth. However, we may suggest ceramic braces or clear aligners when the case permits, for more discreet treatment.

The Benefits of Braces

The greatest advantage for most patients is that braces can transform your smile and restore your self-confidence. However, braces can do more than improve the appearance of your smile. They also offer oral health benefits. By correcting crooked, overlapping, and crowded teeth you will be able to brush and floss more efficiently and reduces your risk of gum disease. As your bite becomes properly aligned, it can also relieve tension in the TMJ or jaw muscles which often causes pain and other uncomfortable symptoms. Aligning your teeth properly can reduce the wear of your front teeth and therefore, keep you looking young. Dr. Ray T Chow is a general dentist trained in multiple areas of dentistry and he can apply expertise to provide you with not only a beautiful smile but a functional one as well.

The Treatment Process

To begin treatment, we must first affix your braces to the teeth. During this process, we will attach the brackets to the front of each tooth. Elastics will then be wrapped around the brackets. Finally, the wire will be inserted to connect the brackets. Together these pieces will exert force and guide the teeth into proper alignment.

Braces can improve the appearance of your smile, oral health, and self-confidence.

Once your treatment goals have been met, your braces will be removed. You will then be provided with a retainer which should be worn regularly to prevent teeth from shifting out of place. Wearing your retainer as recommended is especially critical in the first few months after braces since the teeth and bone are not yet stable.
Typically, you can reduce the frequency of how much you wear your retainer over time, eventually only wearing it at night or a few times each week. The doctor can provide you with the appropriate recommendations to ensure you maintain stunning results.
